Buffalo Bill’s Well and Cow Creek Crossing

Buffalo Bill Mathewson ran a trading post at the crossing. Trail travelers used this 1860’s well.

Chavez Marker
A wealthy Mexican merchant was killed at this location causing an international incident.

Coronado Quivira Museum Lyons, KS
The Coronado-Quivira Museum in Lyons is one of the best small museums in Kansas. Separate displays focus on early inhabitants, Spainish explorers, the Sante Fe Trail, and the coming of homesteaders and permanent settlers. Part of the museum is in the old Carnegie Library, with most of the displays in the newer, adjacent structure.

Father Padilla’s Cross
The cross was erected to the memory of Father Padilla, Franciscan Missionary, who stood with Coronado at the erection of the first Christian Cross on these prairies. Father Padilla devoted his life to the service of the cross and to the Indians of Quivira and suffered a martyr's death in that service in the year of our Lord 1542. The symbol on the Cross is inscribed, Jesus Christ, Victor, and espresses the victory of faith and sacrifice. The square, quartered by the cross denotes the four corners of the world brought into Christian unity when Father Padilla carried the Cross of Christianity to the center of the new world. This monument is a gift to the People of Kansas by the Knights of Columbus of this State. Erected 1950.

Historical Court House
The Rice County Courthouse was built in 1911. The courthouse is located in the center of the town square. The historic site is surrounded by grass, trees and flowers.

Little Arkansas Crossing and Cottonwood Cemetery
The lower river crossing is located between a cemetery and rifle ruts created by Buffalo soldiers.

Lyons Swimming Pool
Baby swimming pool, 2 slides for different age groups, 2 diving boards, and located next to Tobias Park.

Nature Trail
Experience the Rice County Community Foundation’s half-mile sidewalk nature trail.

Ralph’s Ruts
These are some of the most prominent trail ruts to be found in the area.

Stone Corral Site
An area where a 300 foot corral once stood as a trading post and overnight stop.

Tobias Park
Full size sand volleyball court, pavilion with picnic area, regulation goal along with lowered kid’s goal, and selected playground equipment.

Workman Park
Covered picnic area, skateboard area, BBQ grills, drinking water fountain, and decorative water fountain display.
